There’s been so much talk surrounding the up coming changes in Peterborough that we decided to get it straight from the man in front of the charge, Brad Applyby from Planning, Subdivision Control and Special Projects.
In December 2017, the City hosted two open house sessions to inform the public on a proposed approach for allowing secondary suites in the city and to provide an opportunity to comment on the City’s Secondary Suites Policy Review.
The city is reviewing its regulations related to secondary suites in light of changes that were made to the Planning Act in 2011 when the Province of Ontario passed Bill 140, the Strong Communities Through Affordable Housing Act.
The Act included a requirement for municipalities to implement policies in their Official Plans and regulations in their Zoning By-laws to permit secondary suites in detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings.
Secondary suites (also known as accessory or basement apartments, secondary units, two-unit housing, “granny flats” and inlaw flats) are typically defined as self-contained residential units with kitchen and bathroom facilities within a dwelling or within a structure accessory to a dwelling.
